The Knot Unties: Deepening the Embodiment of Yoga (Part 3)

  • Bala Yoga Seattle (map)

“The universe is saying: Allow me to flow through you unrestricted,
and you will see the greatest magic you have ever seen.”

–Klaus Joehle

In this three-part series, you will be guided in an experiential journey of the deeper and subtler aspects of yoga in support of growth and freedom, on and off the mat.

The series is structured around the granthis – a Sanskrit word meaning “knot” or “doubt.” In each session, we will explore one of the three main energetic knots and engage a holistic practice to support the release of energy bound in limiting structures and patterns.

Each practice will include a combination of yoga asana to unwind physical tension and revitalize corresponding regions of the body, as well as lecture on subtle body anatomy (chakras and koshas), relevant teachings from yoga philosophy and mythology, and guided meditation and insight-based inquiry.

This series is ideal for practitioners seeking to evolve their understanding and embodiment of yoga and the subtle body to experience greater vitality, peace, and joy in their lives.

Saturday March 23rd – Brahma Granthi: Reclaiming the Ground of Being

“Whatever forces govern the outer cosmos also govern the inner planes of the body cosmos.
It is held in the Tantras that we do not experience our consciousness as external to our bodies.”

–Madhu Khannu

This session will focus on our “roots” and heightening awareness of attachment to and disassociation from our manifest, embodied experience. The movement practice will focus on the feet, legs, and pelvis in yoga asana, as well as subtle body anatomy addressing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd chakras and annamaya kosha (food/material sheath). Drawing on yogic philosophy and contemporary psychology, we will discuss supportive teachings to establish our ground of being.

Saturday April 27th – Vishnu Granthi: The Heart of Integration

“Love is the only reality and it is not a mere sentiment.
It is the ultimate truth that lies at the heart of creation.”

–Rabindranath Tagore

Moving into the region of the core and chest, this session will support reconnection to the energy of the heart center. The asana practice will focus on the hip flexors, twisting, and backbends, and subtle body exploration will address the 4th chakra, pranamaya kosha (energy sheath), and anandamaya kosha (bliss sheath). We will explore “armoring” and veils of the heart, and engage practices to reveal our innate capacities for love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

Saturday May 18th – Rudra Granthi: Wisdom Beyond Self

“You know that you are. Don’t burden yourself with names, just be.
Any name or shape you give yourself obscures your real nature.”

–Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

The final session of the series will focus on our “branches” and heightening awareness of blocks related to ideological attachments and distortions of mind (avidyā). The movement practice will focus on the shoulders, throat, and cranium (including foundations for inversions), and we will explore subtle body anatomy addressing chakras 5, 6, and 7, and both the manomaya kosha (mental sheath) and vijñānamaya kosha (discernment sheath). Drawing on yogic philosophy and contemporary psychology, we will discuss the last three rungs of Patañjali’s yoga to further open the powers of the mind.

While attending the 3-part series offers a comprehensive journey, you are welcome to register for individual sessions. This series qualifies for 10.5hrs of Continuing Education Hours with Yoga Alliance
