LV2 | Facilitation Practicum

Breathwork Facilitator Training, Level Two Residential Practicum & Deepening Skills (Retreat, 40+hours)

The Level Two Facilitation Practicum is an experiential immersion where you will learn and practice the skills to guide in-person breathwork journeys for individuals and groups.

In an intimate training environment, you will learn techniques for supporting your clients with hands-on, touch-based support (with consent), energy work, and verbal cueing and guidance. You will facilitate 1:1 sessions with a partner, as well as group sessions where you will assist several individuals throughout the course of one journey. In practice sessions, you will receive real-time feedback and guidance in assessing your client’s breathing pattern (and nervous system arousal and other somatic/energetic cues, etc.), and how you can respond to facilitate a safe, meaningful, and transformational journey.

In addition to breathwork sessions, the curriculum will build on the Level One training, going deeper into trauma-informed facilitation, how to navigate challenging situations that you might encounter, format considerations (in-person, online, 1:1, groups, corporate/festival, etc.), relevant physical and subtle body anatomy, energy hygiene (for you, your clients, and your groups), music curation and sound healing, and business considerations as a breathwork facilitator.

As a breathwork trainer, it is not my intention to offer a prescribed format for facilitation, but to share foundational knowledge upon which you can bring forth your own unique medicine, expression, and embodied wisdom. My intention is to provide you with the tools, support, guidance, and embodied confidence to share this powerful modality with your clients and community in an authentic expression of who you are and the unique medicine you carry.

CURRICULUM:

The Role of a Facilitator

We will explore six principles of breathwork facilitation and the primary role(s) of a facilitator. Through experiential inquiry, you will be guided in exploring your own nervous system regulation in relation to ‘big energy’ release processes, as well as deepening self-awareness to support your growth and development as a healing guide.

Hands-On and Touch-Based Techniques & Support

The majority of the training will focus on learning hands-on facilitation techniques and integrating touch-based support into sessions. You will learn different types of touch (supportive, instructive, invitational, energetic), qualities of touch, requesting consent, and how to provide touch to various areas of the body (and receiving valuable feedback from your client partners). You will also learn touch-based techniques for responding to common breathing patterns, and what type of touch can be offered in response to different arousal states.

Energy Techniques & Support

You will learn basic energy practices for breathwork, including scanning for energetic knots/congestion, inviting your client’s intelligence/awareness to certain areas of the body, and energy clearing.

Energy Hygiene & Boundaries

Most individuals drawn to healing modalities are highly sensitive and empathetic, and facilitating breathwork can involve big emotional and energetic experiences for your clients. We will discuss how to support your own self-care and energy hygiene as a facilitator, and how to stay energetically and emotionally resourced and regulated. You will also learn ways to support the energy hygiene and session “container” for individual and group sessions.

Navigating Challenging Situations & Group Dynamics

Breathwork has the capacity to reach the deep terrain of the body, brain, and psyche, with the potential for strong states of experience that can be intense to encounter as a facilitator. This training will explore the nuanced and complex terrain of what can be encountered in breathwork, so that you feel confident and resourced to respond in the most effective manner possible.

Anatomy for Breathwork (Physical, Respiratory, and Subtle Body)

Building from the Foundations training, we will explore aspects of physical anatomy, subtle body anatomy, and respiratory anatomy that will deepen your awareness and possibilities for responding skillfully and supporting your client in unwinding non-productive patterns.

Trauma-Informed Facilitation: Deepening Skills

We will discuss actions that you can take as a facilitator to support the safety and empowerment of your clients, ranging from considerations for set and setting, using props, presenting and introducing breathwork, informed consent and disclosure statements, and conscious language and communication.

Launching Your Breathwork Practice

In this intimate training cohort, your specific questions will be addressed as related to your unique vision for sharing breathwork with your clients and communities, and tools offered for launching your breathwork practice.

Training Schedule:

The Level Two training is offered as both a non-residential training that is typically four days, as well as a residential retreat experience that is typically 5-6 days. The curriculum is the same in both programs, with the residential retreats incorporating daily movement/integration practices, and a bit more downtime in the daily schedule.

Pre-Requisites & ALIGNMENT:

Completion of the Level One Foundations of Breathwork Facilitation is required (see Level One training page for upcoming dates). You can register and apply for Level Two if you have already registered for an upcoming Level One program (that will be completed before the Level Two). If you have not previously worked with Tai, a brief Zoom meeting may be required in addition to the application.

The Sword & Lotus breathwork facilitator training program is intended for those mature in their own journeys of healing and personal development, as that is the essential foundation for supporting others. This program will be well-aligned for healing arts practitioners (therapists, yoga teachers, life coaches, acupuncturists, coaches, shamanic practitioners, etc.) who would like to add breathwork to their toolkit, or to deepen their understanding and personal experience so they can make informed referrals.

Please note that while this program will inherently support individual healing and personal work, it is not appropriate for those currently in crisis or needing more individual therapeutic and healing support. Please contact Tai to explore 1:1 work in that case.

Required Reading: In addition to the Level One required reading (“Consciousness Medicine” by Francoise Bourzat and “Breath” by James Nestor), there will be three additional books of required reading for Level Two:

“My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem, “Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma” by Peter Levine, and “Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness” by David Treleaven

Additional Recommended Reading: “Body Centered Psychotherapy” by Ron Kurtz, “The Pocket Guide to the Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe” by Stephen Porges, “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel van der Kolk, “The Breathing Book” by Donna Farhi, “Anatomy of Breathing” by Blandine Calais-Germain, “The Revelation of the Breath” by Sharon Mijares, & “The Holotropic Mind” by Stanislov Grof

Tai’s breathwork certification has been one of the most thoughtfully put together and well executed trainings I’ve ever attended. I feel empowered and confident to go out and start sharing this incredible work with others. If you are considering this training, do not hesitate, it is worth it!
— Hilary F.
The week spent in the immersion was truly soul reviving and inspiring. The devoted and concentrated time spent away from other distractions allowed for a clarity of focus that allowed a truly deep experience. Tai generously shared her knowledge and skill in ways that surpassed expectation. I feel prepared to facilitate and share this work with others, and feel like I have a network and resources to continue learning from. Studying with Tai was an amazing experience.
— Sharon B.
I had my doubts about signing up for the training and going all the way to Costa Rica. It was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. Tai is so eloquent and gentle in her delivery with all of the information we learned during training. Every last detail was perfect. I would recommend again and again!
— Tiffany O.
Tai’s Breathwork & Immersion Facilitator Training was an expertly crafted week of study and practice in a beautiful and nurturing setting. I went to Costa Rica hoping to build a basic foundation for what it takes to facilitate breathwork and that’s exactly what I got. The program not only gave me a deeper understanding of the body and the many ways in which we breathe but also provided hands-on practice alongside tools to create a safe and sacred space for others. The training also gave me an opportunity to practice breathwork several days in a row, which is always a profound and expansive experience in itself. I highly recommend this training for anyone curious about becoming a facilitator and for anyone seeking an opportunity for personal growth and healing with a wise and compassionate teacher at the helm.
